Ancient Greek poet Homer, in his epic poem Odyssey, tells the story of Ulysses and his voyage along the Italian coasts. As he approached these waters, he encountered the Sirens, whose enchanting songs tried to lure sailors to their death. Warned by the sorceress Circe, Ulysses ordered his crew to block their ears with wax and had himself tied to the ships mast to resist the spell. Defeated and ignored, the Sirens perished, and according to legend one of them, Parthenope, was found on the island of Megaride, where today stands the Castel dellOvo.
